ALASKA’S 10 MOST ENDANGERED PROPERTIES

May is National Preservation Month. Each year, the Alaska Association for Historic Preservation (AAHP)  compiles the Ten Most Endangered Historic Properties in Alaska in recognition.  The 'Ten Most' program calls attention to threatened properties that define our great State, the people that live here and the identity that we share.  The nominations for this program are submitted by individuals and organizations living throughout Alaska.

The 2009 Ten Most Endangered Historic Properties in Alaska are:

            1. Community Hall, St. George Island

            2. Holy Assumption Orthodox Church, Kenai

            3. Attu Battlefield

            4. St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Juneau

            5. Wireless Transmitter Site, Government Hill

            6. Eagle Historic District

            7. Colony Project Warehouse, Palmer

            8. 4th Avenue Theatre, Anchorage

            9. Victor Holm Homestead, Kasilof

            10. Sheldon Jackson College, Sitka

Later in the year, the AAHP will send grant applications to this group of ten.  The grants are usually less than $5000, but may serve as greater leverage for individuals and groups to solicit more funds from a diverse group of investors.

AAHP is dedicated to the preservation of Alaska’s historic and prehistoric assets through education, promotion and advocacy. Preservation of these sites provide a vital link and visible reminder of the past which reinforces the shared continuity and diversity of Alaska.  AAHP publishes a quarterly newsletter, holds workshops, assists historic preservation projects across Alaska, monitors and supports legislation to promote historic preservation, and serves as a liaison between local, statewide, and national historic preservation groups.
